Following three years of hard work; nineteen different development schemes, three planning applications and a planning appeal informal hearing on the last two applications, we have achieved planning approval for development of the site. The scheme will consist of a replacement office building, three A2 shop units, 33no: flats, 12no: houses and associated access roads, parking and play areas. The project is due to start on site in September 2010.

Early sketch perspective section of our proposals for the existing main hall. 40% of the hall is divided off and a mezzanine floor installed. This will house a double size classroom for IT and a Business Management Suite. The school will offer this facility to the local business community outside school hours.
To facilitate this provision, other works to be carried out include the provision of ramps and a platform lift to enable access for all. A new glass lobby to the main entrance and an opened up reception area will greatly improve the public image of the school.
This is the fourth project Burns Guthrie have carried out at Cavendish School. We feel proud to be associated with this friendly and rapidly improving school which is breaking its own records with its exam results.
Ashford Gateway Plus begins on site

Pictured here is vibro compaction of the ground to increase bearing capacity. This will facilitate the use of traditional pad and strip foundations. The process took just 4 days for a footprint of 1000 sq.m. The 'pile' is driven in by both loading and high freguency vibration then hard rock (limestone) is poured in and compacted to form a stone 'pile'. A computer in the cab tells when bearing capacity is achieved. No driving of piles and no delay for testing. The 'piles' were anticipated to be 4 metres long but favourable ground conditions meant most were around 2.5m. Some were as little as 1 metres and ironically will be lost when the pad footings are excavated!
More progress photo's soon.....
